Summary

The current line is Stable Diffusion 3.5 in Large, Large Turbo and Medium versions, with SDXL and SDXL Turbo still offered. You can download the weights and run them with tools such as ComfyUI or diffusers, or use Stability's hosted API and web app instead. The weights are not unrestricted open source: Stability's Community License is free for research, non-commercial use and commercial use by individuals and organizations under US$1 million in annual revenue, while larger businesses need a paid Enterprise license for commercial use. The license also bars using the models or their outputs to build a new foundational model, although fine-tunes and LoRAs are permitted.

Bottom line: Use it when you want image models you can run and fine-tune yourself; confirm the revenue-based license terms before commercial deployment.

A model family, not a single app

Stable Diffusion is Stability AI’s family of text-to-image models. The current line on Stability’s image models page is Stable Diffusion 3.5, offered as Large, Large Turbo (designed to generate in four steps) and Medium (designed to run on consumer hardware), with Stable Diffusion XL and SDXL Turbo listed as additional models. Stability offers several ways to use them: download the weights and run them yourself, call the Stability AI API, use them through cloud partners, or work in its Stable Assistant web app.

Licensing: downloadable, with conditions

The weights are available to download, but not on unrestricted terms. Stability’s license page says its Community License allows research, non-commercial and commercial use for individuals and organizations with under US$1 million in annual revenue; above that threshold, commercial use needs a paid Enterprise license. The same page says you may not use the Core Models or their outputs to build a new foundational model architecture, while fine-tunes and LoRAs are allowed, and that users own their outputs subject to law and Stability’s acceptable use policy. The SD 3.5 Large model card requires accepting these terms before download. Terms can differ between releases, so check each model’s card.

Running it yourself or hosted

For local use, the model card recommends ComfyUI, the diffusers library, or Stability’s reference repository. Self-hosting means supplying your own hardware. The API and Stable Assistant are Stability’s hosted services and are priced separately from the license.

Who it suits

Stable Diffusion suits developers and creators who want to run, fine-tune or embed image models on their own infrastructure, and teams that want a hosted API from the same model family. Businesses over the revenue threshold should plan for an Enterprise license before commercial use.
