Cohere Embed v4 vs Qwen

Cohere Embed v4 is one hosted embedding model; Qwen is Alibaba's whole family of models, mostly known for chat and coding LLMs. Qwen's chat models don't produce search vectors, so the fair matchup is Embed v4 against Qwen's open-weight embedding models: Qwen3-Embedding for text and Qwen3-VL-Embedding for text plus images. The split is hosted API versus weights you run yourself.

What you'd actually be comparing

Embed v4 (embed-v4.0) takes text, images, or mixed pages like PDFs, accepts up to 128K tokens, and returns 256, 512, 1024 or 1536 dimensions. You call it through Cohere's API or a cloud marketplace. It isn't Cohere's newest any more: the docs now list embed-v5.0-pro and embed-v5.0-fast alongside it, with a 2048-dimension default.

Qwen3-Embedding comes in 0.6B, 4B and 8B sizes under Apache-2.0, text only, with 32K context and 100+ languages. The model card says the 8B was No. 1 on the MTEB multilingual leaderboard as of 5 June 2025 (score 70.58). For images, Qwen3-VL-Embedding (2B and 8B, also Apache-2.0) embeds text, images, screenshots and video, with 32K context and 30+ languages.

Paying per token vs owning a GPU

Cohere bills production keys pay-as-you-go. Trial keys are free but rate-limited and can't be used commercially. Its pricing page no longer prints a per-token rate for Embed 4 and sends you to sales; the $0.12 per million text tokens and $0.47 per million image tokens in our listing are the figures cloud price trackers still show. Embed 5 is also sold as dedicated Model Vault instances from $3 an hour.

The Qwen weights cost nothing to download, so your cost is whatever box you run them on. The 0.6B model is small enough for a modest server; the 8B models want a real GPU. Embedding a big corpus once and then only embedding queries is where self-hosting tends to pay off.

One catch with either choice: vectors from different models don't mix. Moving from Cohere v3 to v4, or from either one to Qwen, means re-embedding your whole corpus.

Cohere Embed v4: Pick Cohere Embed v4 (or look at Embed 5) if you want a managed API for long, mixed text-and-image documents and don't want to run GPUs.

Qwen: Pick Qwen's embedding models if you want Apache-2.0 weights you can host, fine-tune, or run offline, and you have the hardware for them.

Cohere Embed v4

Cohere Embed v4

Cohere Embed v4 transforms text, images, and mixed content into unified vector representations for semantic search, RAG, document clustering, and similarity matching. The model supports 1,536-dimensional embeddings with flexible compression via Matryoshka embeddings (256, 512, 1024, 1536 dimensions). Priced at $0.12/1M text tokens and $0.47/1M image tokens, it delivers multimodal capabilities competitive with text-only alternatives. The API supports batch processing up to 128,000 tokens per request with asymmetric search optimization. Limitation: incompatible with v3 embeddings; corpus re-embedding required for upgrades.

Qwen

Qwen

Qwen covers text generation, coding assistance, multimodal understanding, and reasoning tasks across a range of model sizes, all under Apache-2.0 licensing, which means you can run it locally, fine-tune it, and ship it in a product without negotiating an enterprise agreement. The architecture is a Transformer decoder, so the fine-tuning toolchain your team already knows applies directly. Multilingual capability is a documented design goal, not a side effect, making it a practical choice for teams building outside English-first markets. The Qwen Studio interface offers free access for experimentation, while production-scale API usage routes through Alibaba Cloud — meaning your infrastructure story depends on which cloud you already operate in. Teams needing sovereign deployment or cost-controlled inference can self-host, but that path requires operational capacity the vendor does not manage for you.

Pros
  • Unified multimodal model reduces infrastructure complexity
  • Competitive pricing at $0.12/1M tokens for text embeddings
  • Flexible output dimensions (256-1536) via Matryoshka embeddings reduce storage and latency
  • Strong MTEB performance (65.2) with 35% cross-lingual retrieval improvement
  • Supports asymmetric search for optimized query-document retrieval
  • Apache-2.0 licensing allows commercial use, modification, and redistribution without approval gates, so teams can ship fine-tuned variants in production products without renegotiating terms when the business scales.
  • Self-hosted deployment option means inference costs are bounded by your own hardware budget rather than per-token API pricing, which becomes material when request volume climbs.
  • Multilingual design intent — not a post-hoc addition — reduces the prompt engineering overhead for teams building applications in languages where most models were undertrained.
  • Standard Transformer decoder architecture means existing fine-tuning pipelines, quantization tools, and serving frameworks apply without a new toolchain, so your team's existing investment transfers directly.
  • Multimodal understanding is covered within the same model family, so teams building applications that mix text and image inputs do not need to stitch together separate model providers.
Cons
  • Embed v4 vectors incompatible with v3; requires full corpus re-embedding for migrations
  • Image pricing ($0.47/1M tokens) is higher than text and limits image-heavy workloads
  • Trial keys rate-limited and unusable for production, requiring immediate production key conversion
  • Running Qwen at production scale on self-hosted infrastructure requires your team to own the full serving stack — quantization, batching, GPU provisioning. Teams without dedicated ML infrastructure capacity hit this wall fast and either stall the project or hand off to a managed API, negating the cost and independence benefits of open weights.
  • API access at scale routes through Alibaba Cloud, which introduces a geographic and compliance dependency that matters for teams operating under data residency requirements in regions where Alibaba Cloud's footprint creates regulatory friction. Those teams typically switch to a provider with a closer regional presence or a fully on-premise deployment option.
  • The vendor-hosted Qwen Studio is suited for evaluation and prototyping, but teams building production pipelines on it face the same managed-service constraints they were trying to avoid — rate limits, pricing changes, and no direct control over model versioning between updates.
