Summary

Ask a language model to write you a PowerPoint and it will hallucinate brittle XML, corrupt the file, and hand you a deck that won't open — not because the model is bad, but because .pptx is the wrong format for any model to write. Slaide replaces that target with a plain-text Markdown-plus-YAML source file that renders to web, PDF, and editable .pptx from one command.

The core idea is format arbitrage: a .slaide file runs roughly 10 KB of clean text versus 4+ MB of XML for the equivalent PowerPoint, so models write it correctly the first time and diffs are readable in any code review. One source file produces three outputs — a navigable web deck, a print-ready PDF, and a round-trippable .pptx with real text boxes — and the vendor states these outputs cannot drift from each other because they share the same render path. The MCP server and Agent Skill let Claude, Codex, or Cursor draft and validate slides without a human in the loop for every edit. The ceiling appears when your design needs layout decisions the theme system cannot express — at that point you are either editing theme YAML or reaching for PowerPoint directly, which defeats the round-trip.

Bottom line: Slaide earns its place when you are shipping decks fast with an LLM and need clean version control; it starts fighting you the moment a stakeholder needs a one-off slide layout the theme cannot describe.

Best For: Developers and AI users building decks, Teams needing diffable presentation sources, Rapid iteration with LLMs on slide content
  • Plain-text .slaide source is version-controllable in Git, so slide changes show up as readable diffs in pull requests instead of opaque binary deltas — teams that have lost track of which deck version went to which stakeholder stop losing track.
  • One source file renders to web deck, PDF, and editable .pptx without separate export steps, which means the three outputs cannot silently diverge from each other the way they do when you maintain parallel files.
  • The MCP server and Agent Skill give Claude, Codex, and Cursor a validated interface for drafting and rendering decks, so agents write slides that pass format validation on the first attempt instead of producing corrupted XML.
  • Apache-2.0 licensing with a self-hosted path means there is no vendor lock-in on the core toolchain — teams that need to run this inside a private network can do so without negotiating an enterprise contract.
  • Fidelity-scored .pptx import converts existing PowerPoint files to editable .slaide source, so migrating a deck library does not require rebuilding slides from scratch.
  • Custom slide layouts that fall outside the theme system's named slots cannot be expressed in .slaide source — when a stakeholder needs a one-off arrangement of elements, the team either extends the YAML theme (a separate codebase to maintain) or exports to PowerPoint and edits there, at which point the source file and the shipped deck are no longer the same thing.
  • There is no API available, so integrating Slaide into an existing content pipeline requires either the CLI or the MCP server — teams expecting a REST endpoint to call from their application will need to wrap the CLI themselves or wait for an integration that does not currently exist.
  • Teams whose non-technical stakeholders need to edit slides directly in PowerPoint after export will find the round-trip breaks immediately: edits made in the exported .pptx do not sync back to the .slaide source, and re-exporting overwrites those changes. Teams with this collaboration pattern switch to tools that treat PowerPoint as the primary format rather than a build artifact.

The wrong format for AI

Ask a language model to write you a PowerPoint and it will hallucinate brittle XML, corrupt the file, and hand you a deck that won’t open. Slaide replaces that target with a plain-text Markdown-plus-YAML source file that renders to web, PDF, and editable .pptx from one command.

Core approach

The core idea is format arbitrage: a .slaide file runs roughly 10 KB of clean text versus 4+ MB of XML for the equivalent PowerPoint, so models write it correctly the first time and diffs are readable in any code review. One source file produces three outputs — a navigable web deck, a print-ready PDF, and a round-trippable .pptx with real text boxes — and the vendor states these outputs cannot drift from each other because they share the same render path. The MCP server and Agent Skill let Claude, Codex, or Cursor draft and validate slides without a human in the loop for every edit.

Strengths

Plain-text .slaide source is version-controllable in Git, so slide changes show up as readable diffs in pull requests instead of opaque binary deltas. One source file renders to web deck, PDF, and editable .pptx without separate export steps, which means the three outputs cannot silently diverge from each other. The MCP server and Agent Skill give Claude, Codex, and Cursor a validated interface for drafting and rendering decks, so agents write slides that stay consistent.

Limitations

Custom slide layouts that fall outside the theme system’s named slots cannot be expressed in .slaide source. There is no API available, so integrating Slaide into an existing content pipeline requires either the CLI or the MCP server.

Who it is for / who should skip it

Best for developers and AI users building decks, teams needing diffable presentation sources, and rapid iteration with LLMs on slide content. Skip it if you need one-off layouts outside the theme system or a REST endpoint for your pipeline.
