Summary

GitHub describes Copilot as an assistant that works where code already lives: inline suggestions and chat in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, Xcode and Neovim, plus chat on GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile and Windows Terminal, and a CLI. Its agent can research a repository, edit files and open a pull request for human review. Individuals can start on Copilot Free, which is capped at 2,000 completions a month with automatic model selection, or pay $10, $39 or $100 a month for Pro, Pro+ or Max. Organizations pay $19 or $39 per seat for Business or Enterprise, with pooled AI credits and $0.01 per extra credit.

Bottom line: A strong default for teams already working in GitHub; check AI credit allowances, because heavier agent and premium-model use draws on credits.

What GitHub Copilot does

GitHub Copilot is GitHub’s AI assistant for software work. According to GitHub’s overview, it suggests code as you type, answers questions about a codebase, reviews changes, and can take an assigned task as an agent that researches a repository, edits files and prepares a pull request. GitHub notes that the developer stays responsible for reviewing and approving that work. Copilot can also work with MCP servers and third-party coding agents.

Where it runs

GitHub’s feature matrix covers VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, Xcode and Neovim. The plans page adds Copilot Chat on GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile and Windows Terminal, and says every plan includes Copilot CLI and the Copilot app. Features differ by editor and plan.

Plans and pricing (checked October 17, 2026)

The plans page lists Copilot Free and Copilot Student at no cost, then Copilot Pro at $10 per month, Pro+ at $39 per month and Max at $100 per month for individuals. Organizations pay $19 (Business) or $39 (Enterprise) per granted seat per month. Every plan includes a GitHub AI Credits allowance; for organizations, usage beyond the pooled allowance costs $0.01 per credit, while code completions and next edit suggestions stay unlimited on paid plans. Copilot Free is capped at 2,000 completions per month and uses automatic model selection only. These are Copilot prices, separate from GitHub’s own repository plans such as GitHub Team.

Who it suits

Copilot fits developers who already track work in GitHub issues and pull requests, and organizations that want the admin controls GitHub describes: member access, feature policies, file exclusion, usage data and audit logs. The plans page says Copilot is not currently available for GitHub Enterprise Server.
