Summary

Use Claude Code for a defined repository task, such as fixing a bug or implementing a feature, then inspect the diff and relevant test results. It supports terminal, IDE, desktop and web workflows, with repository instructions, MCP tools and automation options. Claude Pro includes access at US$20 billed monthly or US$200 billed annually; subscription usage is shared with Claude. API-key and cloud-provider authentication follow separate usage billing. Local sessions run tools on your computer. Team and Enterprise can enable execution-only self-hosted runners in public beta, off by default. Model inference remains hosted and session content still reaches Anthropic. The software is proprietary, and generated changes still need review.

Bottom line: Useful for developers who want an agent to implement reviewable repository changes and can supervise commands, costs and project validation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Code free?
Claude Code is a paid tool (Pro US$20/month or US$200/year billed upfront; API/provider usage billed separately). No permanent free tier is offered.
Does Claude Code have an API?
Yes. Claude Code exposes a developer API. See the official documentation at https://claude.com/product/claude-code for details.
What platforms does Claude Code support?
Claude Code is available on: Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web.

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent for working with a software project. It can inspect a repository, edit files, run commands and tests, and prepare git changes. You can use it in a terminal, supported IDEs, the desktop app or web sessions. The product page introduces the tool, and the technical overview describes available surfaces and development workflows.

A practical development workflow

Open the relevant repository and describe a bounded change with acceptance criteria. Ask Claude Code to inspect the affected code, implement the change and run the relevant checks. Review the diff and test results before committing. Repository instructions, skills and MCP tools can provide context; CI integrations and the Agent SDK support automation. Access to files, commands and connected services depends on the configured permission controls.

Access and costs

Claude Pro includes Claude Code at US$20 billed monthly or US$200 billed annually. Higher and organizational plans are also available; see current pricing. Subscription activity shares usage with Claude. Authenticating with an API key instead uses API billing, including when an existing ANTHROPIC_API_KEY selects that path. Check the subscription access guide and cost controls before a large task.

Local execution and self-hosted runners

Terminal and IDE sessions execute on the developer’s machine. Team and Enterprise organizations can also enable self-hosted execution environments, currently in public beta and off by default. This beta puts task execution on your infrastructure, not model inference. Inference uses Anthropic or supported hosted providers, and session content still reaches Anthropic. It does not provide downloadable Claude model weights or offline inference. See self-hosted environment details for the conditions.

Claude Code is proprietary despite its public GitHub repository; the repository license reserves rights. It can produce incorrect code or commands, so keep changes reviewable and run project checks. Permission settings help control actions but do not replace reviewing the result.
