Summary

Dify combines a workflow builder, a prompt IDE, document ingestion and retrieval, tool-using agents and production logging, and every app it builds exposes an API. It connects to hundreds of hosted and open models, including any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Dify Cloud starts with a free Sandbox plan; on annual billing, Professional costs $590 and Team $1,590 per workspace per year. Once included message credits run out, you can use your own model API key, billed by that provider. The self-hosted Community edition runs with Docker Compose. Its license is a modified Apache 2.0 that requires authorization for multi-tenant services and keeps frontend branding intact.

Bottom line: A practical choice for building RAG and agent apps with a visual builder; read the license before offering Dify as a multi-tenant service.

What Dify is

Dify, developed by LangGenius, is a platform for building applications on large language models. Its GitHub README lists a visual workflow canvas; support for hundreds of proprietary and open models from many inference providers, including any OpenAI-compatible API; a prompt IDE; a RAG pipeline that extracts text from PDFs, slide decks and other documents; agents that can use Dify Marketplace tools, MCP servers or your own APIs; and logging for monitoring apps in production. Every Dify app also comes with an API, so other software can call it.

Cloud or self-hosted

Dify Cloud is the hosted option. On October 17, 2026, the pricing page listed a free Sandbox plan (200 message credits, one member, five apps), Professional at $590 per workspace per year and Team at $1,590 per workspace per year on annual billing, and custom Enterprise pricing. Message credits are for trying hosted models; once they run out you can switch to your own model provider API key, which the provider bills separately.

The free Community edition is self-hosted with Docker Compose; the README lists a minimum of 2 CPU cores and 4 GiB of RAM. Self-hosting avoids Dify’s subscription, but you still pay for servers and any model APIs.

Source-available, with conditions

Dify’s license is a modified Apache 2.0. Commercial use is allowed, but running a multi-tenant service, where each workspace is a tenant, requires written authorization, and anyone using Dify’s frontend may not remove or alter the logo or copyright notices. Because of those added conditions, it should not be treated as plain Apache 2.0. The pricing page lists commercial license authorization and multiple workspaces under Enterprise.

Who it suits

Dify fits teams building chatbots, RAG apps or agent workflows that want a visual builder and built-in APIs, either hosted or on their own servers within a single workspace.
