Your AI invoice arrives as one lump sum from each provider — no breakdown by app, no signal on which product is burning the budget.
Costbase pulls usage data directly from each provider's admin reporting APIs — no traffic rerouting, no SDK changes, no proxy sitting in your production path. You paste one admin key per provider, and the dashboard surfaces spend by app, model, and key across OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, OpenRouter, and ElevenLabs. Whisper transcription, embeddings, and text-to-speech finally appear alongside chat completions instead of disappearing into a miscellaneous line. Data syncs hourly in the background. The ceiling appears when you need request-level detail — Costbase describes itself as a cost-visibility tool, not a request debugger, and that distinction matters when you're chasing a specific API call gone wrong.
Bottom line: Pick this when your finance team is asking which of your three AI products is eating margin — skip it when you need per-request traces or the ability to set spend alerts before the invoice arrives.

Most AI billing dashboards require you to reroute production traffic through a third-party gateway to get any cost breakdown. Costbase takes a different approach: it reads aggregate usage from each provider’s official admin reporting APIs — the same endpoints that back the providers’ own billing pages — so your request path stays untouched. The setup is four steps: connect a provider with one admin key, let the tool discover every API key in the account, rename each key to the product it powers, and read a unified chart grouped by app, provider, or model. The vendor states a full year of historical usage is backfilled on connection.
The defining architectural choice is the pull-don’t-proxy model. Proxy-based cost tools insert themselves into your critical path — added latency, a new dependency, and your prompts transiting someone else’s infrastructure. Costbase operates out-of-band: it can be slow or unavailable and your production apps are unaffected. Admin keys are used only for read-only reporting endpoints, encrypted at rest, and never used to modify anything in your accounts.
Costbase fits teams who have already built their AI products and are now trying to understand what they actually cost to run. It covers models beyond chat completions — Whisper transcription, embeddings, images, and text-to-speech — which most proxy-based tools ignore or flatten. The gaps show up when you need granularity below the key level: xAI spend appears account-level only because xAI reports at the team scope, not the key scope. And because there is no API and no self-hosted option, teams with compliance requirements around data residency or those who need to feed cost data into their own reporting pipelines will find the tool a dead end.
Data freshness carries a built-in lag: providers publish usage with a delay of minutes to a few hours, and Costbase re-pulls the last three days every hour to converge on invoice-accurate figures. The vendor marks each cost figure as either provider-reported dollars or a computed estimate (tokens × a maintained pricing table), so you can see exactly which numbers are authoritative and which are approximations.
