ChatGPT vs WorkBuddy

They overlap more than you'd guess: both now take a task brief plus your files and hand back a finished document, spreadsheet or deck. ChatGPT does it from the web, desktop or phone, with OpenAI's own models and a much wider range of jobs (chat, research, coding through Codex). WorkBuddy is Tencent's desktop agent for Mac and Windows that works directly on files on your computer and can be driven from WeChat Work, Feishu or Slack. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, there's little reason to add WorkBuddy unless your team lives in Chinese office chat apps.

Where the work happens

ChatGPT's Work mode runs in a managed cloud environment on the web. It plans the task, reads uploaded files, searches the web and produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations or PDFs for you to review and download. In the Mac and Windows desktop apps it can also use Computer Use where that's switched on for your plan and region.

WorkBuddy is a download for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows (x64 and ARM64). It acts on the files on that machine, but it isn't offline: its FAQ says it needs an internet connection to reach the AI model services. Remote tasks sent from a chat app only run while the app is open on your computer.

Price for one person

ChatGPT has a Free plan, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20, and Pro at $100, $200 or $500. Work and Codex draw from the same usage allowance, so heavy coding eats into document work and the other way round.

WorkBuddy's Free plan gives 100 credits a month, and the model is picked for you. Pro is $10 a month or $96 a year for 2,000 credits, Team is $40 per seat, and top-up packs need a paid plan. Tencent doesn't publish how many credits a typical report or deck uses, which makes the two hard to compare on cost.

Chat apps and ecosystem

WorkBuddy's integration guides cover Slack, Telegram, Discord, WeChat Work, Feishu, DingTalk, QQ and a WeChat bot. That's the clearest reason to pick it: you can message it from the tools Chinese offices already use. ChatGPT connects through its own projects and plugins instead, and is the safer choice if your work is in English-language SaaS.

ChatGPT: Pick ChatGPT if you want one subscription that covers chat, research, file-based reports and coding, from any device.

WorkBuddy: Pick WorkBuddy if you want an agent working on files on your own Mac or Windows PC and your team messages it from WeChat Work, Feishu or DingTalk.

WorkBuddy runs as a local-first agent on the desktop, autonomously chaining file access, web search, and document generation into single-prompt workflows. The Tencent ecosystem fit is real: WeCom and WeChat integrations mean scheduling and messaging tasks route without extra setup, which matters if your organization already lives there. Outside that ecosystem, the integration surface narrows fast. Teams running mixed SaaS stacks report reaching for MCP-compatible connectors to fill the gaps — which adds configuration overhead the tool is supposed to eliminate. Self-hosted execution is the headline privacy story, but the closed-source codebase means you audit what the vendor discloses, not the code itself.
