Local AI Clipboard Actions

Summary

Local AI Clipboard Actions runs AI operations on clipboard text using on-device models instead of cloud services.

The tool lets users apply transformations such as rewriting or extraction directly to copied content without sending anything off the machine. It occupies the productivity niche where frequent text handling meets strict privacy or connectivity constraints. Its headline differentiator is the complete absence of network calls. Pricing is not listed. The largest limitation is dependence on the quality and speed of whatever local models the hardware can support, which typically lag behind the largest remote systems.

Bottom line: Use it when clipboard tasks must remain fully local; avoid it when peak model capability matters more than privacy.

Clipboard AI tools that phone home to OpenAI or Anthropic require API keys, rack up per-token costs, and send your code and documents to external servers. apfel-clip takes a different path: it bundles the apfel on-device AI engine and routes every transformation through Apple Intelligence on-chip. The workflow is copy anything, hit the global hotkey ⌘⇧V from whatever app is focused, and pick from a context-aware action list. The result either auto-copies to your clipboard or opens in a side-by-side review panel where you can edit before accepting. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.

The differentiating feature is content-aware action filtering. The app detects whether the clipboard holds plain prose, code, a JSON payload, or an error message and shows only the actions that make sense for that content type. A copied stack trace surfaces debugging actions; copied paragraph prose surfaces grammar and rewrite options. Custom actions are also supported — any prompt can be saved as a named action and it appears in the list automatically, alongside favourites, reordering, and a persistent local history of every past transformation.

This tool fits one profile tightly: an individual macOS developer or writer on Apple Silicon who runs frequent one-shot text or code edits and has a hard requirement that data stays on-device. It breaks outside that profile. Intel Macs are not supported — Apple Intelligence runs on-chip only on M1 or later. macOS 26 Tahoe is a hard dependency; the app does not fall back to an earlier OS. Apple Intelligence must be enabled and the device language set to English. Teams on mixed hardware or non-English locales have no path to adoption.

The tool is MIT-licensed, distributed as a signed and notarised binary, and installable via Homebrew cask at `arthur-ficial/tap/apfel-clip`. Updates flow through `brew upgrade –cask apfel-clip`. There is no API surface, no cloud tier, and no paid option — the entire feature set is available at no cost from the first install.
